What is the best way of protecting your artwork from ageing/elements?

Posted by admin under 5

I was looking at some of my old artwork. I was disappointed to see how bad the paper has yellowed over the years. I would like to save current artwork from the same fate. Most of my pictures were stored in a cedar chest.
What is the best fix-it for watercolors, pen & ink, or pencil ?
Please tell me how you store your artwork.
I can not afford to have most of my art professional framed.

Use acid free art materials, separate the older, more acidic pieces from the newer, less acidic pieces, and probably store them somewhere other than a cedar chest.
As for storage, store your art in a flat-file, with each piece separated from the others by a piece of acid-free glassine. Glassine is the smooth paper used by art-preservationists and philatelists (stamp-collectors) to protect art and stamps.
De-acidification is a very expensive process, and probably isn't worth it. This process is mostly used on old and rare books.

When painting how do you avoid it being sticky afterward?

Posted by admin under Painting

I'd like to spray-paint a piece of furniture, but I've had problems in the past with painting. I tried painting an end table once, and also some shelves, and both times the paint dried sort of sticky. Even months after it was painted it was still sticky. I'm not sure if it's because I live in a humid area (Houston) or if I'm just using cheap paint. But does anyone know how to avoid the sticky feel after painting?

First of all, did you prime the piece, or just paint it? If you didn't prime, then whatever finish was on the piece will be interacting directly with the paint, which can cause stickiness. Priming the piece creates a barrier between the old finish and the new one, preventing that interaction. There are some paints which have primer in them or which double as primer, look at the label before you buy to find one.

Second, try to pick days that aren't as humid (hard, I know!) and use a fan on the piece while it's drying. Use a good quality paint, not the super-cheap stuff, and that should take care of it. I've had pretty good results with Krylon.

As far as getting rid of the sticky feel on the ones you've already painted, your best bet would be to strip them, prime, and repaint with good paint. Good luck!

How do I airbrush T-shirts and truker hats?

Posted by admin under Airbrush Shirts

What do I need to get to make airbrush t-shirts and trucker hats? And how much does it usually cost to get an airbrush kit? does it come with colors?

And How do I make them? Pleas tell how and give me some tutorial sites

First, you're gonna need an airbrush. Iwata (a manufacturer) makes an airbrush that's well suited to t-shirt application…the Eclipse. It's a double action (very important) and comes in both a gravity feed, or a siphon feed. I am unsure of the price, for either the airbrush alone, or if a 'kit' exists.
I'd check out Coast Airbrush (www.coastairbrush.com) they're knowledgeable folks, and very helpful. The magazine Airbrush Action (www.airbrushaction.com) has demo's by Terry Hill and other well known t-shirt artists. You could check out airbrushtalk.com for archived demo's.
Bear Air (www.bearair.com) or Dixie Art supplies (www.dixieart.com) as well as Coast airbrush may have kits for you to buy. The only hitch I can see, is getting a compressor or airsource that will keep up with the necessary (roughly) 60 psi to propel the paint used for this type of painting (something like Createx Textile paint. For the hats you may need to get a catalyst to increase the adhesion of the paint to a synthetic surface (trucker hats are typically never cotton).
Good luck…now go throw some paint.
